What do you mean I'm not entitled?!

I believe that I AM entitled. I am a veteran, I'm not asking for 'special' treatment, though a thank you would be nice, even though it often makes me blush and try to change the subject...

I do however believe that all veterans are entitled! The government has an obligation to them, one and all regardless of gender, rating, rank or branch of service...

To healthcare for their injuries, be they mental or physical because of their service to our country.

I believe that they (the government), should do more to help homeless veterans who suffer from a mental illness because they were sent to war and are now no longer able to interact with other members of the population without putting them at risk or causing themselves so much anxiety that they can't move from the spot they are standing/siting in. Those that live under a bridge, in a paper box, in a homeless community, in a forrest, etc. because that is the only way that they feel safe.

I believe that when a veteran or active duty member has lost a(n) limb, they should be given the very best possible prosthetic, regardless of the cost, because they gave that limb defending our countries population and ideals; or even helping the population of another country to obtain 'We the People'.

Alas, this is a topic near and dear to my heart, and I could be on this particular soap box for the rest of my life, so I will just get off of it now...

Dinner for a friend

As you may remember Friday was a very sad day for a friend. Her wonderful husband passed away. Though he had cancer of the intestines, the doctors think it was a seizure that dislodged a clot that went right to his brain that took this wonderful man.

Last night I brought some dinner for her, one less worry on her mind. I had the chance to meet his sister, mother and father while I was there. I could see the red eyes of all, though the tears may have stopped for a moment, taking the time to eat and watch his favorite college team play football.

I brought my girls with me, and we reminisced about shenanigans at BBQ's. You see his wife is a little box of fun, and was unable to climb the back of the slide/pool-thing that she had at the last BBQ. He tried to push her up, and when that didn't work (it was a good 30 feet high!) she slipped down and jumped into the pool at the bottom of the slide. He was a bit on the drunk side, it was dark and he couldn't see her just sitting there in the 'pool'. He starts calling out to everyone where is D? Check the house, did she go back in the house? Laughter ensued from all, for it was a great story to illustrate just what a goober he was.

On that note, the laughter, we gave much needed hugs and departed.

Tomorrow is the viewing and Wednesday he will be laid to rest locally.

Day 12

Odd that though yesterday was Veterans Day, today is the day that we are observing it. Why can't we just observe it on the correct day...

Today I am thankful for the ability to bring a smile to the face of a friend that lost her beloved soul-mate after only 2 years of marriage.

Day 11

I missed this post yesterday, so here it is...

Today I am thankful for my little family and their health.

Only The Good Die Young

The world, a family and the United States Navy has lost a great man today. William passed away as a result of a quick battle with his body's own cells that would just not stop undergoing mitotic division... also known as CANCER.

Will is survived by my friend Danielle and their wonderful three young children.

I would like to take the time to dedicate 'Love, Me' by Collin Raye.

Day 9: What is a Veteran?

Today I am thankful for every person that is or ever served our nation in the US Military...

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem.

You can't tell a Vet just by looking.

He is the cop on the beat who spent months in God awful heat sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account lazy children and gang members into Marines, Soldiers, Airmen, and Seamen. Teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies
unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals, meals, and sakes they could have been given, awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and Whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Active duty, retired, or reserves... this person signed a blank check to the United States of America, payable in amount up to, and including their life.
